When a patient visits Arlington Dental Excellence with red, inflamed gums due to plaque below their gum line, Dr. Layth will typically perform a deep cleaning to remove the plaque before a more extensive surgical treatment is needed. This deep cleaning procedure is known as scaling and root planning and is commonly used to treat gingivitis (the earliest stage of gum disease).
Dr. Layth Ghanim can remove plaque, toxins, and tartar above and below the gum line by scaling the teeth. Dr. Layth will then treat the roots of the teeth by smoothing out the areas, especially if the accumulation of bacteria has caused deep pockets to form in the gum line. Evening out these pockets prevents bacteria from gathering there again. Depending on the severity of the plaque and tartar, your mouth may need to be treated one area at a time over a series of visits to our office. If needed, our dentist will gladly provide a local anesthetic to ensure you are fully comfortable.
Scaling and root planing can be performed as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with other periodontal procedures. Usually, Deep Cleaning is done in two visits to make it very easy on our patients and also having both sides of your mouth being numb is not something we want our patients to experience.
